I'm currently re-reading --- for the second time --- fiction by Pamela Aidan,"These Three Remain: A Novel of Fitzwilliam Darcy."I bought this book on Amazon . com many months ago. I always enjoy reading well written Jane Austen Continuation Novels; and Pamela Aidan writes with grace. I am now in the midst of chapter Three " As a Dream Doth Flatter," and my training as a psychoanalyst and writer, tells me that the author of this book, Pamela Aidan, is both psychologically well informed, and a remarkably graceful writer. I assume that she is deeply attuned to the emotional moods of the fictional characters that she so artfully constructed and developed in her book. Unlike some authors that I've read in the Jane Austen Continuation Novel Jon-rah, Pamela Aidans' writer voice is alive on the pages of "These Three Remain..," and it easily stirs my own psychological imagination. I recognized the strong impact of Pamela's writer voice on my thoughts and ideas, by the Third or Fourth Chapter of her book. It was then that I felt myself strongly identifying with Mr Darcy's pain. I had actually allowed Fitzwilliam Darcy's pain and anguish to wash me, and allowed myself to deeply empathize with him; as only a working psychoanalyst does in searching for the underlying meaning within a patient's emotional current problem. In my mind, I put Mr Darcy on the Psychoanalytic Couch in my office! First, I read pages of his present thoughts and accessed his recent interactions with Elizabeth Bennet, which agonized him; and I was struck by the deep oral intensity of his confusion and the sadness. His strong feelings of anger and anguish seemed more profound, than the calmer Oedipal Stage lover. So tried to understand the earlier stage emotional source of Darcy's current pain; and eventfully, I postulated, that when Elizabeth Bennet refuses Fitzwilliam Darcy's marriage proposal, she brought feelings associated with Darcy's most profound latency-childhood wound, the death of his beloved mother. In his daily life, Darcy may not think of his mother, but she is ever present in his unconscious-memory; and Elizabeth's refusal brought feelings from that early unexpected loss of into the present, coloring the present with equally heavy emotion. According to Sigmund Freud's Developmental Theory, Darcy is a normal adult man, who has unfortunately transferred unto a much love woman in his present life, unresolved feels from his child past. Mother is lost, Elizabeth alive, and perhaps still attainable, Her refusal felt like death, but it is not. Elizabeth refusal was a blow to Fitzwilliam Darcy's normal-narcissism, but his ego is healthy, it had a rational core. I find all dialogues and personal reflections of characters within this book, totally consistent with the British Regency Manners, which we observe in Miss Jane Austen's novels. The behavior of fictional characters are consistent with the theories of Sigmund Freud. When I finish this book, I will read the next in this series. I recommend both books to readers who buy from Amazon. My books were promptly delivered and are totally clean paperbacks.

I have been awaiting the release of this book -- the third in the trilogy -- and it did not disappoint! These Three Remain covers the period from Darcy's reacquaintance with Elizabeth at Hunsford/Rosings through their eventual engagement and marriage. As one of the wealthiest and most eligible bachelors in England, it never occurs to Darcy that his attentions to Elizabeth will not be welcome. He usually has to fend off women who are interested in him for all the wrong reasons. Her refusal of his proposal stuns and shakes him to the core sending him on a journey of self-discovery that changes the way he looks at himself and his world. It causes him to reexamine his relationships with those closest to him, especially his sister, Georgiana, and his friend, Bingley. With no expectation of ever seeing Elizabeth again, let alone winning her heart, he determines to become a different man, one who would be worthy of Elizabeth's good opinion. As we all know, he has the opportunity to see Elizabeth again when she and her aunt and uncle visit Pemberley. When he saves her sister, Lydia, from ruin, he does not want Elizabeth to know lest she feel some obligation to him. If he is to win her heart, it must be because she sees the changes in him for herself. I found it fascinating to watch how Darcy's love of Elizabeth matures and goes from being centered on his own needs to being focused on her. I highly recommend this book if you love the romance of Elizabeth and Darcy. It fills in some very rich details about these characters we love so well and helps us to see them with fresh eyes.
I really do like this author. This particular book had the addition of several new characters. I felt that they were added only to lengthen the book and add some intrigue.

I took the advice of many other reviewers and skipped the second book in the trilogy. Personally I find $10 very steep for a book.

I enjoy most P&P variations. This book was no exception. Unfortunately, I felt that it was drawn out far too long. I found myself skimming through much of it, watching for those areas of introspection that Darcy should have had.

In my opinion, it is a good story. Not great, and certainly not worth the cost.
