She likes the sweet life she has made for herself, but that sweet life is threatened when her father announces they are moving to New York City so that he can star in his own cooking show and Sheridan falls for the cute boy in her class. Sheridan, however is a strong young woman that girls will easily identify with and root for. This contemporary YA fiction novel was a treat to read even if it did make me crave sweets!

One of the best young adult contemporary novels I've read in 2015 is "The Sweetest Thing" . It blends the pain of loss, romance and cake decorating into a story that`s emotionally-charged from beginning to end.

It begins in the town of St. Mary's where fifteen year old Sheridan Wells is a talented artist who`s inundated with cake decorating orders at Sweetie's Bake Shop , her grandmother's bakery located in the triangle that includes her home and Sheridan & Irvings her father's restaurant. A girl whose mother ran off with another man when she was young, Sheridan is a workaholic with little time for a social life or a boyfriend; her friendships relegated to Lori, Jack and the staff of the restaurant and bakery.

When her father the brilliant chef Donovan Wells announces that they're moving to New York where he'll star in a cooking show for "Extreme Cusine TV" Sheridan rails at the idea, not wanting to leave her grandmother, friends and the Bake Shop. Her father refuses to concede to her concerns when the show will make him a celebrity and contribute financially to his family`s future so Sheridan steps up the search for her mother, hoping she can help change his mind. But disaster lies just around the corner as Sheridan also has to deal with a frustrated and angry father, a determined art teacher and a moody best friend who's trying to stop her from losing her heart to the hottest boy in school.

The plot heats up when years of annoyance with her father explodes and she refuses to be a part of his plans. She steps up her desperate search for her mother when the production crew decides to use Sheridan`s sixteenth birthday as the theme of the opening show and decides she should bake the cake that will be the centerpiece of the party. This doesn't bode well for a girl with few friends who learns that the producer is going to hire her worst enemies at school as extras. Adding fuel to the dilemma Jack has found a clues in their search for her mother that lead to a second Sweetie`s bakery and to one of the contestants in a cake decorating contest. The intensity and suspense continually builds as secrets are unravelled and her scheme backfires. Your heart is stirred by a plot that's filled with loss, betrayal and broken promises as Sheridan`s dream crumbles and she's shattered by the truth.

Amidst the pain of discovery, Sheridan is swept up in a whirlwind romance with the cutest and most popular boy at school. A dream come true Ethan Murphy not only loves to cook like her father, but has his eye on the "Cake Girl" much to her best friend Jack's distress. The plot thickens when romantic sparks ignite between Sheridan and her childhood friend Jack, and her heart has to decide which of the two boys is right for her.

Christina Mandelski has created characters in this story that are unforgettable as they deal with a whirlwind of problems. Fifteen year old Sheridan Wells a talented, creative cake decorator is caught up in a storm of emotions as she fights against changes in her life by clinging to broken promises in her past. She's kind, hardworking, and impulsive as she struggles to make her mother's worn out assurances a reality. Only with heartbreak and a new-found maturity does she find the promise of love and security that she needs. Jack is Sheridan's patient, funny and thoughtful best friend who's faced with competition for her heart. Ethan Murphy is the wealthy, over-confident, self-absorbed player in the love triangle who's looking for more than a girlfriend in Sheridan. All add passion, fire and high-energy to the drama that unfolds.

I thoroughly enjoyed "The Sweetest Thing" as Sheridan Wells struggles against the changes in her life only to find promises of the past broken forever. And I look forward to reading "Cake Girl" when it's released.
This is a book definitely worth reading! It is filled with memories of what it's like to be a young woman, written with style and a great sense of humor!

Sheridan Wells is the Michelangelo of cake decorating. Too bad the rest of her life is far from sweet. Her mom took off years ago, her dad is obsessed with fame and fortune as a reality show chef, and the idea of a boyfriend is laughable. This beautifully written story will make you laugh, cry, and cheer for Sheridan. A great find.
The Sweetest Thing is a great read. I love all the baking imagery and Sheridan's search for her mom. It's amazing how she is so wrapped up in finding her mom, yet the best love is all around her. Treat yourself to this wonderful book!
