The world is in economic meltdown but a mining town on the edge of nowhere is booming. With the town's population exploding, it's easy enough to hide a crime - or a dirty past. Banished to the stock squad after the fallout from a police frame-up, Detective Senior Sergeant Cato Kwong is brought in from the cold to solve the case of a torso washed up on the wild shores of the Great Southern Ocean. But Kwong faces powerful opposition when his investigation lifts the lid on the exploitation of migrant workers and disturbs an even darker criminal mind.

I found Cater very good at his depiction of Australiana, and I am disappointed that what could have been such a good story was marred by the extremely unprofessional unheralded scene changes (some occurring even in mid paragraph). At first I thought it must have been an error in printing or publishing, however it soon becomes clear the format is deliberate. If his intention was to differentiate his style from the mainstream (and mostly talented) writers, he has certainly achieved this.
One should be required to think while reading suspense/thriller/mystery, however line of thought should be directed toward plot outcome and character appraisal rather that constantly having to calculate where one is.
Unfortunately, while I am constantly on the look-out for good Australian suspense/thriller/mystery fiction, I found this work bothersome and tiring. I would not purchase another of Carter’s works without first sampling to ensure it follows at least a fathomable format.
I also found some of the sub-plots finished unresolved. Example: the heroine’s fixation to right a wrong done to her in the past that, in the end, remains unresolved.
Disappointing, Alan Carter, such a pity for what could have been such a great read.

Prime Cut Cato Kwong Mysteries Book 1 edition by Alan Carter Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Great story set in one of the most beautiful places in the world. An annoying feature was switching plot with a change in paragraph only. No space or star to warn you.
Not a bad read, found the absence of new paragraph a little difficult chronologically.(changed subjects and incidents with seemingly unconnected characters and places)
Loved this book, set in Australia. Had to go read the next two in the series. Detailed characters, evil villains in street clothing, a few crooked cops, a good few good cops and well plotted crimes. recommend it
Despite quite a good storyline the book was a bit of a struggle maintaining interest. The characters were quite wooden and it was difficult to develop an empathy with the main players. The degree of swearing throughout did not achieve it's presumed goal of "the tough Aussie cop".
This is a good story. It addresses a number of issues that apply in remote mining towns in Australia, where rapid expansion and high wages stress social systems.

But, it is spoiled by a very poor rendition.

The book interweaves two separate tales, which each have a number of strands. Each chapter can contain aspects of each element. In the published book, the transition between each is indicated by a gap between the paragraphs. This is missing from the edition. Indeed, in some cases, there is not even a paragraph break between the different scenes. All very confusing.

A good book. But buy the book, not the version!
Alan Carter's style of writing took me some time to get used to. He jumps in paragraphs one scene, one conversation then another or back with ease. Once I understood the style I cam to really appreciate the complexity and character development he develops. I gave this book three stars simply because it took me too long to "get it". But I'm reading the second installment of the series and it's moving quite swiftly. This confusion may just be me and others will think I'm too dense. I do recommend these police procedurals.
I enjoyed this book a lot. I liked seeing something new to me with the setting in West Australia. Characterization was good and the plot/story lines held together well. There were a couple of unresolved threads but it appears this is a series so maybe they'll be addressed in the next book. Regardless, that didn't bother me too much as the major stuff did get covered.

This really should be a four star for the genre. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to any that enjoy mysteries but as remarked in other reviews the scene changes in the kindle edition were not well defined. Before reading, I thought no big deal but then found out it was. I was surprised at how frustrating the abrupt changes were for me.

There was also a lot of Aussie slang that was unfamiliar to me. I just kept the urban dictionary close by when reading and all was well.

I have already purchased book 2- Getting Warmer (Cato Kwong) and am looking forward to reading it.
