As soon as I read these words on the cover: 'Book 1 of the Jack Harper Trilogy' I knew, or at least had a good indication of the author's intent, that the eponymous Jack was going to be a great character. Indeed, the plot of the book is pretty much Jack's bildungsroman (life story). And indeed, he is a great character.
It's hard to put my finger on, but the writing in this book is phenomenal, it's so polished it blows a lot of what I read out of the water.

His smile spread its wings for miles, feathers glancing off those on the dance floor. “See what I mean?” he asked, and he moved back and forth on the rail, rather pleased. “We don't need facts to get to the truth. We just need questions.”
“And drugs.”

Moreover, it's a great story. Jack Harper is born to a woman who can't look after herself, let alone Jack and his sister. Who knows what life will be for them as they get older. However, a “savior” appears in the for of Cyrus, who tests the young Jack's worthiness in a wager reminiscent of any Grimm's story or folktale where the reader knows that whatever the outcome, the one rolling the dice will lose.

I have seen things while with him and in his home that I simply.. I do believe...
The Universe has its darker aspects. Would it be wrong to say those aspects converge? That they meet sometimes in place they are most welcome or find a brother?
How is that psychopaths find one another?
How is it that murderers often propel themselves toward their own destruction?
Why do we speak of karma at all?

But the reality of this moment turns out far far darker than one could imagine. Cyrus is Jack's saviour, his hero, his mentor, his father-figure. But the boy lives a life that no one should ever live and that no one will ever understand. He is at once compelling and irrevocably damaged. This is how Cyrus saves.

“As you know, there are Christians in the world. And as you will soon find out, there are those who believe more in Satan then they do in God. Satan makes more sense to to them. And the others out there – the others of our little group – most of them believe in Satan, and they say that God does not exist. This is so obviously false. THE things that I have seen... that eventually you will see as well, should convince you that God can do nothing but exist. Nevertheless, we cannot follow Him. That is our way.”

As horrifying as this book often is, it is also very human. Some of the scenes left me queasy, and the drug scenes are dark like 'Less Than Zero' or 'Requiem for a Dream'. Yet it is so compelling. I enjoyed every page.

Rating: 10 out of 10 – This was not simply a case of personal choice; anyone would love this book.

Halloween Scare Rating:

2 out of 3 spiders – very unsettling; a real horror story. Kept me awake at night.

Pivot The Jack Harper Trilogy Volume 1 L C Barlow 9781484984475 Books Reviews

I am impressed with the authors style of telling the story, unfolding different events not necessarily in the order they happen, but in a way that ties everything together. The layers of the main character are slowly revealed, which makes for a very interesting ride, back and forth, keeping me wondering how, why, what? I have never posted or written a review on a book in my 54 years, but I just was so enthralled in the storyline, the characters, and at the end, as with all good books and movies, I was left blinking my way back to reality, but wanting the story to continue. I am an avid reader and I regularly tell others of good books and authors to read, but it has been a long time since I was so excited about a book that I looked for other books by the same author. I even googled the author, LOL. Its like the first time as a child that I read "Tom Sawyer" or "Treasure Island". It opened up a whole new world for me. I am not a fan of romance novels, and lean more towards historical fiction, but do have a taste for thrillers and supernatural threads in a story. It is not for the weak of heart or those easily offended by the harsh truths of human nature. I will be recommending this story to others, especially my daughter and teenage granddaughter, I know they will enjoy it as much as I have. I am so looking forward to the next "Jack" novel.
This book is an odd one. The devil (Cyrus) takes human form and seeks out a small child (Jack) who lives in a dysfunctional family. He somehow manages to become the caretaker of the child in his own home. He immediately indoctrinates him into a life of killing. He trains the child to believe that evil outranks good because it erases empathy, thus allowing a life of freedom, rather than the constraints you experience with guilt. By the time Jack becomes a teen, he has murdered an enormous amount of people. At some point during the book, he encounters a divine entity that empowers him with the ability to raise the dead. He digs up graves of murdered children and their families and brings them back to life. He also returns to murder scenes where the families of ministers have been slaughtered and does the same with them. (The devil thinks it would be fun to make a man of God lose his faith.) Jack's conscience has obviously shifted. Cyrus discovers what he is doing and beats him to within an inch of death. Jack leaves Cyrus' home and, at some point, returns and watches his house burning and we are to believe the devil perishes.

The entire time up to this point, the book has toggled back and forth between Jack's life with Cyrus and his life after Cyrus. After the fire, it is only about "after Cyrus". A pivotal point develops when he befriends a very quirky guy in college - Patrick. Their friendship becomes very strong and a major reveal is presented.

During this period, Jack struggles with drug addiction and goes to sleazy parties with Patrick, but seems to otherwise lead a conventional life and there are no signs of his previous violent tendencies, although he is always armed with a gun.

Very early one morning, he is attacked and kidnapped while walking back to his dorm. Suffice it to say that, to me, he encounters another devil in human form. I'm lead to believe this because the man who ordered the kidnapping had a lifestyle of debauchery that very much paralleled Cyrus' - the venue at which Jack is propositioned by the kidnapper is a sex club. In fact, I'm led to wonder if it is another form of Cyrus. This man forces Jack to fight another man, the outcome of which had to result in the death of one of them. Jack did not lose and the man is impressed. He subsequently offers Jack a job as a hit man and the promise of great wealth. We do not find out Jack's decision. We leave him watching a sex scene by himself in the club and we know that it disgusts him.

Cut to an evening with Jack and Patrick returning from a party, where they relax in front of a fire. Patrick has been asking him all along about his background and, this evening Jack is going to tell him. The books ends with Patrick listening.

Obviously, this book has to have a follow-up. We need to know what happened to Jack the four years between leaving Cyrus and entering college, the future of him and Patrick and if he will, once again, murder for this new guy.

I recommend this book but it is far from conventional. The author has a very strong talent for writing. I see other reviewers have balked at its gore and violence, but I didn't think it was at all over the top. Give it a try.
